Helmet, Work in ProgressWork in progress. Proofing out a concept pipeline that gives the modeler a sort of ZBrush maquette to work with in addition to a final 2D concept. The idea is to reduce guesswork and simplify the initial stages of the modeling process, particularly when creating props which need to either animate or fit precisely with existing assets. I'll take renders of this sculpt and add photo and paint work for the final.
Hunter Killer DroneA small, palletized space fighter designed to be deployed from cargo and gunboat vessels without extensive support facilities. Largely autonomous, their use represent a ‘panic button’ approach to armed attack.Armament consists of two packs on nuclear-pumped x-ray lasers, charged from a molten salt reactor. With the drone loaded in a sealed package, the reactor can be brought online in minutes via the discharge of thermal batteries.
Survey CraftCargo shuttle, converted temporarily to a survey vessel by addition of a sensor pod on the nose. Spherical tanks are for liquid nitrogen to cryogenically cool the sensor package. Really, this was an attempt to take a very standard (but readable) hull shape and try to make it more interesting by use of negative space. Also an attempt to work clearly and quickly through use of flat color.

Salvage VesselWarmup sketch that got out of hand. Messing around with negative space and trying to get the look of a slightly disreputable ‘salvage’ operation while avoiding at least a few cliches.
Happy New Year! I'm just about finished with another plate for the book, but I did a sketch from the setting that I thought I'd share. Towards the end of the conflict, the gravity resist engines had gotten reliable and compact enough that they were used for atmospheric work in smaller vehicles. Here I visualized how one might look as a tractor on tug, with coachwork and secondary equipment as they might implemented by a locomotive works.
Corvette StudyA tone and color study of a spacecraft. I’m trying to use negative space in a way that doesn’t look contrived while still being interesting. It’s my usual M.O.: A cartoony shape with (somewhat) realistic detail. Maybe a little too much horror vacui? Eh, I regret nothing.Scott Robertson’s ‘How to Render’ book is really useful.
Color Dynamics SketchesHere are some Photoshop brush setting experiments, based on some useful stuff my Art Director showed me.Color Dynamics and Transfer have a lot of potential, but their use is not always obvious starting out. Still getting the hang of them, myself. Here, Color Dynamics are set to Control > Pen Pressure and Apply Per Tip is checked.All other settings are left at default. Most of the images seen here are done with black as the foreground color and white as the background, with both Opacity and Flow set to 100%.Transfer is easy to visualize as painting on top of wet paint, so there’s a nice sort of dirty brush effect.

Mook With A NukeEnemy submarine with an area attack and slow, heavy gun. Aesthetic is somewhere between the old Raiden games and In The Hunt. Wanted to do something a little more lighthearted than an exploration of next-generation warfare in Asia and the proliferation of nonstate actors and the use of autonomous combat vehicles. So, nukes and cartoon colors. Wait. Damn.
